ABOUT WBJJA

The World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association (WBJJA) is a democratic, non-profit organization established in 2018.

WBJJA is dedicated to the global development of BJJ, Submission Only (Tap Out), and Submission Wrestling as sports, ranging from recreational to high-performance levels. We drive the establishment of unified rules, safety standards, organizational structures, progression pathways, and international exchange.

The name "World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association" was registered in 2018 as a non-profit organization under Romanian law, adhering to the highest standards of democracy and transparency. Below are the guidelines defining our efforts in promoting BJJ, Submission Only, and Submission Wrestling worldwide, while supporting athletes (both beginners and advanced) in their personal development journeys.

COMPETITION FORMAT

Starting in 2020, WBJJA will feature three competition formats:

  1. Elite (Champion title) - no belt divisions. Available only at the Nationals, Continentals, and World Championships.
  2. Open Belts Cups (classic level category). Available at the National, Continental, and World Cups.
  3. Submission Only (Open Belts and Elite) - no points, no advantages, only submissions (WBJJA Rules).

  • Points BJJ Only
  • Tap Out (Submission Only)

MISSION

Organizing Development

The potential for developing BJJ as both a sport and a lifestyle is vast, yet, like any significant endeavor, it comes with its challenges. To fully harness this potential, there's a need for a common reference point, a democratic body to organize and propel the sport's development on a global scale.

The mission of WBJJA is to foster the growth and recognition of BJJ, enabling international competition by organizing national BJJ federations worldwide in a welcoming and participatory manner.

Ensuring a Safe Competition Environment for Beginners and Advanced Practitioners

Our goal is to reduce the number of beginners who abandon BJJ due to facing more experienced opponents against whom they feel they have no chance of winning. We aim to provide practitioners with incentives to participate in competitions tailored to their skill level within a safe environment.
